A dramatic scene unfolded along Thika Superhighway on Friday afternoon after a road accident turned violent.
A rider lost his life in the crash, sparking anger among fellow boda boda operators who set the motorist’s car ablaze.
Witnesses say the incident happened near Kenyatta University, where a white Audi SUV reportedly knocked down a rider.
The young man is said to have died on the spot, leaving his colleagues in shock and fury.
Within minutes, a crowd of boda boda operators gathered, blocking the road and demanding justice for their colleague.
According to those at the scene, the Audi driver tried to plead with the mob but was quickly overwhelmed.
The riders descended on the vehicle, smashing its windows before pouring flammable material on it and setting it on fire.
Flames engulfed the SUV as the helpless owner stood by, unable to save his car.
Efforts by firefighters from Ruiru Municipality to contain the fire bore little fruit.
By the time their engine arrived, the Audi had already been reduced to a burnt shell.
The wreck was later seen in the middle of the busy road, causing heavy traffic snarl-ups as police moved in to control the situation.
Residents who witnessed the incident described it as both shocking and saddening.
“The anger was too much, people could not be controlled. They felt one of their own had been unfairly killed,” one eyewitness told reporters.
Police officers later confirmed that investigations had been launched into the accident.
They urged the public to remain calm and allow justice to take its course instead of taking the law into their own hands.
Authorities also warned that burning vehicles or attacking motorists only adds more chaos to already tragic situations.
This is not the first time boda boda operators have reacted violently after accidents involving motorists.
In past cases, similar mob justice incidents have been reported in Nairobi and other towns, raising questions about how best to resolve road disputes.
The Friday afternoon drama left many shaken, with some calling for better road safety measures and stronger dialogue between motorists and boda boda riders to prevent further tragedies.
