Fresh details have emerged regarding the puzzling death of 26-year-old Simon Warui, after investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) unraveled a shocking twist to the case.
According to detectives, Warui, who had been employed in Nairobi, left work on Saturday, September 13, 2025, carrying his employer’s office keys without permission.
The following day, he reportedly used the keys to gain access to the premises. Once inside, he broke into his employer’s workstation and allegedly stole Ksh 170,000 in cash before vanishing.
CCTV footage from the building clearly captured him committing the act, which immediately alerted his employer and prompted the DCI to launch a manhunt.
Detectives believe Warui quickly traveled to Mombasa with the stolen money, determined to spend it lavishly on entertainment and leisure.
Sources close to the investigation say that Warui appeared to be on a reckless spending spree in Mombasa, indulging in a short-lived lifestyle that raised eyebrows.
However, his sudden death in the coastal city has now complicated the case, leaving more questions than answers.
Police are still piecing together the events that led to his demise. It remains unclear whether foul play was involved or if his death was linked to the stress of being on the run.
Investigators are considering multiple angles, including the possibility of associates who might have taken advantage of his stolen money, or even betrayal from those he encountered while hiding out.
The DCI has since warned Kenyans, especially young people, against engaging in criminal activities that not only put their freedom at risk but also endanger their lives.
They emphasized that Warui’s case should serve as a harsh reminder of how crime often ends in tragedy rather than prosperity.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased are still in shock. Relatives who spoke to the press described him as a quiet young man, though they admitted he had recently been under financial pressure.
They expressed disbelief at the revelations that he was involved in theft, saying they are waiting for the official autopsy report to understand the cause of his death.
As detectives continue with the investigation, the case of Simon Warui has sparked public debate about the growing number of youth turning to crime as a shortcut to wealth, only to meet untimely and tragic ends.
