Nairobi’s Charter Hall was full of excitement on Sunday night, September 21, as the first-ever Next Superstar Kenya competition came to an end.
The big winner was Joseph Japheth, popularly known as Jose Jay, a gospel singer and barber from Donholm. The moment his name was called, he could not believe it—he even collapsed on stage in disbelief.
Jose impressed the crowd and judges with his powerful vocals and energetic performance, backed by a talented dance crew. His stage presence won over fans and earned him the crown as Kenya’s next superstar.
The 14-week competition, hosted by Amina Abdi and comedian Eddy Butita, had started back in May with thousands of hopefuls auditioning across the country. In the end, only six finalists made it to the grand finale.
Jose walked away with the grand prize of KSh 1 million, while first runner-up Rennic received a brand-new motorbike. The second runner-up, Jambia, took home rare jewellery worth KSh 150,000.
Speaking after his victory, Jose said persistence was the key to his success.
“I have tried many competitions before but never won. This time I didn’t give up, and I thank God for this moment. I will use the money to rebuild my barbershop, which was recently raided,” he shared.
Judges King Kaka, Size 8, and Motif Di Don praised Jose’s outstanding talent, while the Kenya Film Commission encouraged young people to see creativity as both a career and a business.

StarTimes CEO Jimmy Carter Luoh confirmed that the talent show will now be held every year, saying the company is committed to supporting Kenya’s creative industry for the next 10 years.
For Jose Jay, the win marks not just a career milestone but also a fresh start in both music and business.
