The driver of the trailer involved in Sunday’s fatal crash at Kikopey, Gilgil, has spoken about the moments before the accident that claimed 16 lives.
The collision happened on September 28, 2025, along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway when a 14-seater matatu attempted to overtake and rammed into the oncoming trailer.
Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru confirmed that 13 passengers died on the spot, while three others succumbed to injuries later.
Speaking to a local TV station on Monday, the trailer driver said he saw the matatu speeding toward him but could not prevent the crash.
“I noticed the matatu approaching fast. I sounded my horn and tried to brake, but it was too late. The collision happened in seconds,” he explained.
The tragedy left families shattered. Among the victims was the family of Stephen Gicharu, whose wife and two children had boarded the matatu to attend a function in Nakuru.
“I spoke to them that morning before they left. Later, I tried calling but couldn’t reach them. I later learned my wife and one child had died, while my other child was critically injured,” he said.
Road Safety Association of Kenya chairman David Kiarie linked the rising cases of road accidents to corruption in the licensing process, saying some drivers acquire licenses without training.
The Nakuru–Nairobi Highway has long been a hotspot for deadly crashes, with police urging motorists to observe traffic rules and avoid reckless overtaking.
Investigations into the Kikopey accident are ongoing.
