The political landscape in Kasipul is currently marked by intense debate over the succession of the late MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. Boyd Were, his son, is among the five aspirants vying for the ODM ticket.
However, his bid has been met with resistance from local leaders, including Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga. Magwanga has publicly opposed Boyd’s candidacy, urging residents not to elect him solely based on family ties.
He cited recent examples where relatives of deceased leaders were defeated in party primaries, such as Ryan Malulu in Malava and William Cheptumo’s son in Baringo, to argue that succession should not be automatic .
In contrast, Boyd has received endorsements from several ODM leaders, including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma. Kaluma criticized Magwanga’s remarks, accusing him of harboring personal grudges against the late MP and his family .
As the ODM nominations approach, the Kasipul constituency faces a crucial decision: whether to elect a candidate based on merit and leadership qualities or to consider family lineage as a determining factor.
This situation underscores the broader debate in Kenyan politics about dynastic succession and the importance of evaluating candidates beyond their familial connections.
