Fresh details have come out on the puzzling death of 26-year-old Simon Warui after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations shared shocking findings about his final days.
The DCI reported that Warui left his employer’s workplace with the keys on Saturday, September 13, 2025.The following day, he broke into the Nairobi premises and stole Ksh 170,000 before fleeing to Mombasa to enjoy the money.
According to investigators, CCTV cameras captured him during the break-in, prompting an immediate search.
The agency further revealed that after spending all the stolen cash, Warui sought help from a Catholic church in Mombasa, where he was later arrested and booked at Central Police Station.
However, his arrest quickly turned tragic. Police stated that Warui appeared weak and distressed when he was brought into custody.
Moments later, he allegedly requested to use the toilet, where officers claim he collapsed. The police report indicated that while he was in the toilet, officers heard a loud bang and rushed in, only to find him on the floor with blood coming from his nose.
Warui was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
A post-mortem conducted at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital revealed that he died from cardiorespiratory collapse caused by a fracture dislocation of the neck consistent with a fall from a height.
The National Police Service confirmed that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority has been notified.
Meanwhile, Warui’s family insisted they wanted justice.
His cousin Godfrey Gichuru said they had travelled from Nairobi knowing he was alive, but on reaching Mombasa they only found his body at the mortuary.
Rights groups have now demanded a speedy probe into his death.
