Former Deputy President and Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has ignited fresh political debate after claiming that Moses Kuria’s party is nothing more than a political tool designed to benefit President William Ruto by splitting the Mt. Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a series of grassroots meetings, Gachagua alleged that the sudden rise of Kuria’s political outfit was not organic but instead part of a calculated move by State House to weaken the opposition coalition in the region.
He argued that President Ruto is deliberately sponsoring multiple parties in Mt. Kenya to prevent the emergence of a united bloc that could challenge his re-election bid.
The remarks come at a time when Mt. Kenya politics is increasingly under the spotlight. Once solidly behind President Ruto in 2022, the region has shown signs of shifting loyalties as rising economic hardships and internal political rifts take hold.
Moses Kuria, who has yet to directly respond to the accusations, has been positioning himself as a champion of regional economic empowerment, pushing for policies tailored to benefit farmers, small traders, and industries in the central region.
His allies dismiss Gachagua’s claims as political propaganda, saying his party provides alternative leadership voices and should not be demonized.
Nevertheless, Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s remarks highlight growing suspicion among opposition leaders that President Ruto may use splinter parties to weaken their bargaining power in key battleground areas.
The former deputy president has been vocal in rallying Mt. Kenya leaders to reject what he calls “divide-and-rule politics” and instead back a united front under his leadership.
