Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika on his historic victory in Malawi’s recent elections. In a statement posted on Thursday, September 25, Gachagua hailed the people of Malawi for their resilience and commitment to democracy.
He described Mutharika’s win as not only a national achievement but also a continental milestone.
“This election sends a clear message that Africa is no longer a playground for corruption, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes,” Gachagua noted.
The former DP emphasized that Malawi’s citizens have shown that the ballot remains the most powerful tool for change, especially where governments fail to listen to their people.
He highlighted that the era of strongmen and oligarchs, from historical leaders like Idi Amin and Mobutu to Mugabe, is gradually giving way to people-driven governance.
Gachagua also praised outgoing President H.E. Chakwera for conceding defeat gracefully and congratulating Mutharika, describing it as a demonstration of political maturity.
Turning to Kenya, Gachagua urged citizens to draw lessons from Malawi’s democratic exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections. He encouraged Kenyans to reject fear, cynicism, and hopelessness, and to reclaim their future through democratic means.
“This victory is not only for Malawi but for Africa. It shows that citizens are awake, they see, they feel, and they act,” Gachagua said.
He added by reaffirming that the will of the people is supreme, and called on Kenyans to remain vigilant and committed to democratic principles.
Gachagua’s statement underscores the importance of citizen participation, peaceful transitions, and the enduring power of democracy across the continent.
