Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned opposition parties against actions that could divide their support ahead of the upcoming Mbeere North by-election.
Speaking on Sunday, Gachagua highlighted the potential dangers of fielding multiple candidates from opposition-aligned parties. He argued that such a move would inadvertently favor the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate.
“If DCP had fielded a candidate in the Mbeere North by-election, it would have risked splitting the opposition vote, handing the UDA candidate an easy victory!” Gachagua said.
The warning comes as tensions rise among opposition groups, with parties strategizing to maximize their chances in the contest. Mbeere North has historically been a keenly contested constituency, making unity among opposition forces crucial.
Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has maintained a significant presence in the region, though the party has refrained from announcing a candidate for the by-election.
Political analysts say that the ruling UDA party could exploit any fragmentation within opposition ranks to consolidate its hold on the seat. They stress that strategic alliances could determine the outcome of the race.
Several opposition parties are reportedly in discussions to coordinate their campaigns, ensuring they present a united front to voters. Gachagua’s statement reinforces calls for disciplined collaboration.
Observers note that the Mbeere North by-election is seen as a litmus test for both ruling and opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Winning the seat could signal political momentum.
As campaigns intensify, opposition leaders face mounting pressure to prioritize unity over individual ambitions to prevent handing the constituency to the ruling party.
