Githurai 44 County Assembly Member Deonysias Mwangi Waithira will meet with residents to decide whether or not to resign from the Assembly.
Waithira stated in an NTV interview on Monday that he had no intention of running for the elected seat again after his retirement was confirmed.
“I’ve said that things aren’t working under this government. Even if the IEBC declares a by-election today, I will not run. Waithira stated, “I’ll just wait until the next election, if I’m still interested by then.”
Waithira resigned in a letter to the County Assembly Speaker, citing anger with what he described as’systemic failure by the County Executive to undertake development projects and offer basic services to residents’.
Despite acknowledging the faith placed in him by the UDA party and the Githurai people, Waithira underlined that he could no longer serve as MCA under the current circumstances.
Days later, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi pronounced the resignation invalid since it lacked an official signature from the ward representative.
But Waithira repeated his determination to leave the job, denying that his decision was self-serving.
“If it were about my personal interests, I would’ve kept quiet, stayed home with my family, and continued earning a salary while forgetting about the people of Githurai,” the man said.
On Tuesday, September 23, the MCA said that he will meet with Githurai people in public to solicit their support for his desire to formally resign from his position.
Waithira claimed that the only way he would reconsider his resignation was if his electorate directly asked it.
