Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has sharply criticized politician Kakai Bissau for abandoning the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) to work with President William Ruto.
Natembeya, a senior figure in DAP-K, accused Bissau of betrayal, saying his move undermines the trust and values on which the party was built.
Speaking during a weekend rally, the governor expressed disappointment, arguing that Bissau’s defection was not guided by principle but by personal interests.
“It is unfortunate when leaders we trusted choose to betray the party that supported them, only to dine with those they once opposed,” Natembeya remarked.
The governor went further to remind residents of past political shifts, drawing parallels with the fallout between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then-Deputy William Ruto.
He noted that just as Rigathi Gachagua once served as Deputy President under Ruto’s administration, political betrayal has become a recurring theme in Kenyan politics.
Natembeya maintained that DAP-K remains committed to championing the needs of ordinary citizens, stressing that loyalty and consistency are critical in shaping credible leadership.
“Leadership is about service, not opportunism. If you stand with a party, you must also stand with its people,” he added.
Bissau, who has been eyeing a stronger political foothold in the region, has not issued a formal response to the governor’s remarks.
However, his recent appearances at State House functions and engagements with Ruto’s allies have signaled a shift in his political allegiance.
Analysts suggest that the defection could heighten tensions within the opposition, especially as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Natembeya’s strong rebuke reflects the broader frustrations among opposition leaders wary of losing members to the ruling coalition’s expanding influence.
