The government has released more than Ksh422 million to support vulnerable households living in drought-hit parts of the country.
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed the cash transfers were issued under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP).
According to NDMA, the money was sent to 132,779 households across eight arid counties.
This is meant to cushion families struggling with food shortages caused by prolonged dry conditions.
In its breakdown, Turkana County received the largest share, with 39,831 households benefiting from Ksh107.5 million.
Mandera followed with Ksh59.6 million for 22,107 households. Marsabit was allocated Ksh55 million to reach 20,387 families, while Wajir got Ksh51.7 million for 19,171 households.
Other counties also benefited: Garissa received Ksh24.8 million for 9,217 households, Samburu Ksh21.9 million for 8,118 households, Tana River Ksh19.7 million for 7,329 households, and Isiolo Ksh17.8 million to support 6,619 households.
The latest disbursement covers stipends for August 2025, amounting to over Ksh358 million. Additionally, some pending payments for July were included.
In Turkana North, 6,833 households received Ksh18.4 million, Turkana South got Ksh18.2 million for 6,751 households, Loima was given Ksh17.1 million for 6,351 households, while Turkana East benefited from Ksh10.1 million to support 3,752 families.
Beneficiaries can access their funds through Kenya Commercial Bank and Equity Bank branches or agents.
NDMA advised those facing issues with their payment details to visit the nearest branch for assistance.
Earlier this month, NDMA also disbursed Ksh294 million to 109,000 households in the same regions. Each family receives a monthly stipend of Ksh2,700.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader Inua Jamii programme, which aims to protect vulnerable groups from the harsh effects of drought and economic hardship.
NDMA Chief Executive Officer Hared Adan explained that the support is critical for families living in arid and semi-arid counties.
“The programme is part of the Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project, which ensures food security and dignity for households affected by recurring droughts,” he said.
