A cloud of grief has descended on Gitwamba village in Kiambu County after a man allegedly stabbed his cousin to death following a heated argument over a football match.
The victim, identified as Stephen Njoroge, is said to have been attacked by his cousin James Mbugua on Saturday night, September 20. The two were watching the much-anticipated clash between Manchester United and Chelsea when tempers flared.
According to police reports, the altercation escalated moments after the game ended, with Manchester United emerging victorious.
Family members who were present revealed that what began as a light-hearted exchange quickly turned into a violent confrontation.
The suspect is reported to have fled the scene immediately after the incident, leaving relatives in shock and confusion. Police have since launched a manhunt for him as investigations continue.
Relatives described the two cousins as inseparable and said there had been no history of conflict between them. Their uncle, overwhelmed with grief, said the tragedy had left the family broken.
“They were first cousins, always together, and had no bad blood. This has completely shattered us. We never thought something so petty could end in death,” he said.
Another family member suggested that alcohol may have influenced the suspect’s behavior. “Alcohol can make someone act irrationally. It can lead to actions they would never consider when sober,” the relative noted.
The shocking incident has sparked conversations on the dangers of mixing passion for football with heated arguments and substance abuse.
In a related case, police in Southern Tanzania recently reported a similar incident where a young man was killed after a dispute over a local derby between Simba and Yanga fans.
Meanwhile, Kiambu residents are calling for calm, urging football fans to remember that the game is meant to unite and entertain, not divide and destroy lives.
