Political tensions are rising in Kasipul Constituency ahead of the ODM party nominations, following a public rejection by Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga of Boyd Were’s bid to succeed his late father, former MP Charles Ong’ondo Were.
Speaking just days before the primaries, Magwanga warned voters against choosing candidates based on sympathy or family ties, arguing that such decisions could perpetuate poor leadership. His remarks have sparked backlash from within ODM ranks, particularly from Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
“We are constantly told to wipe the tears of bereaved children—but who wiped the tears of families whose loved ones were murdered? Please do not vote for someone simply because of sympathy,” Magwanga said, referencing recent UDA primaries in Malava and Baringo where sons of deceased leaders were defeated.
Boyd Were, one of five aspirants seeking the ODM ticket, gained prominence following the assassination of his father earlier this year. His candidacy has received support from several party leaders, including Kaluma, who has accused Magwanga of harboring personal grudges against the Were family.
“Magwanga, Charles Ong’ondo Were succeeded you as MP for Kasipul. You didn’t attend his funeral. Your KSh 20,000 M-Pesa contribution was sent back. You then shot at your official car to act as a victim of violence. What did Were do to you that you fight him and his family even after his heartwrenching murder?” Kaluma posted.
Kasipul has attracted over ten aspirants, with five contesting under ODM, two running as independents, and others representing different parties. Besides Boyd Were, key contenders include Newton Ogada (ODM), Robert Riaga, and Philip Aroko (independents).
ODM has pledged to conduct free and transparent nominations between September 24 and 27, amid growing calls for civility and fairness in the selection process.
The exchange between Magwanga and Kaluma reflects deeper division s within ODM over succession politics and the role of bereavement in candidate selection. It also highlights the emotional weight carried by families of slain leaders and the political sensitivities surrounding their legacy.
