The National Police Service Commission has shaken the table after revealing that the 2025 recruitment of 10,000 police constables will be conducted entirely online. The move, announced to promote transparency and weed out corruption, has triggered mixed reactions from Kenyans across social media.
In a Facebook reel, the commission explained that the digital system will replace the traditional physical process, where bribery allegations and claims of “buying slots” have tainted past recruitment drives. For the first time, candidates will upload their details, documents, and applications through an online portal — a step officials insist will level the playing field.
On the streets, Kenyans are split. A section believes going online is the only way to dismantle powerful cartels that have made recruitment a cash cow. They argue that by removing face-to-face interactions with officers, it will be harder for corrupt gatekeepers to demand bribes from desperate job seekers.
But others are not convinced. Skeptics warn that digital recruitment could sideline youths from rural areas who lack internet access, computers, or even the money to constantly buy bundles. They fear the shift may only benefit urban youth while locking out equally qualified candidates in marginalized regions.
The debate has also turned political, with critics questioning whether the commander in chief’s administration has the willpower to enforce transparency once the successful applicants are announced. They argue that corruption in the police force is deeply entrenched, and technology alone may not clean up the system.
Insiders point out that this digital shift will be closely monitored by leaders such as interior CS Murkomen and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who have both been vocal about security sector reforms. Failure to deliver a clean, credible recruitment could pile more pressure on an administration already under fire from restless Gen Zs demanding accountability.
For now, the country waits to see if the online system will live up to the hype or simply transfer corruption from the field to the screen.
