Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has moved swiftly to silence speculation that he could shelve his 2027 presidential ambitions. Speaking in a strongly worded statement, Kalonzo made it clear that he will be on the ballot to face President William Ruto, brushing off claims pushed by rivals that he was preparing to bow out of the race.
The ODM boss Raila Odinga’s former ally said his competitors are simply spreading propaganda because they cannot handle the reality of his growing influence ahead of 2027. In a video carried by Tuko, Kalonzo underlined his determination to take on the commander in chief directly, warning his opponents that he will not be intimidated or blackmailed into political retreats.
The debate about Kalonzo’s candidacy has been fueled in recent weeks by allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who insist he should step aside and throw his weight behind their camp. They argue that Kalonzo lacks the numbers to mount a serious presidential run and would be better off negotiating a coalition deal.
But Kalonzo has dismissed the talk as wishful thinking, saying it is part of a calculated scheme to weaken his profile. He told supporters that the same narrative has trailed him in every election cycle, only to collapse once campaigns heat up. His message was firm, that he is not anyone’s political spare wheel.
Insiders note that Kalonzo’s move is also meant to reassure his Ukambani base, where anxiety had started building over the constant rumors of a possible withdrawal. With his eye on building a national coalition, he is keen to project strength, resilience, and independence from power brokers circling the 2027 race.
For Gachagua’s camp, the rejection is a clear signal that Kalonzo will not be co-opted into their slogan politics. Instead, he has chosen to directly confront President Ruto, setting the stage for an intense clash in the countdown to the polls.
