The government has released over Ksh422 million to support vulnerable families in arid parts of the country through monthly cash transfers.
According to the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), a total of 132,779 households across eight counties will benefit from the funds, which cover the August payment cycle.
The targeted counties include Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Garissa, and Tana River.
Each household will receive Ksh2,700 meant to help them buy food and other basic items.
NDMA Chief Executive Officer Hared Adan said the initiative is part of efforts to cushion families from the impact of drought and climate shocks.
“The government, through NDMA, has disbursed Ksh422,458,200 to vulnerable households under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP).
This support is aimed at easing hunger and reducing the burden on families living in areas most affected by drought,” Adan said in a statement on Monday, September 22.
The distribution is broken down as follows: Turkana will receive Ksh107 million for 39,831 households, Mandera Ksh59 million for 22,107 households, Marsabit Ksh55 million for 20,387 households, and Wajir Ksh51 million for 19,171 households.
In Garissa, 9,217 households will get Ksh24 million, Samburu 8,118 households will access Ksh21 million, while Tana River and Isiolo will receive Ksh19 million and Ksh17 million respectively.
Beneficiaries have been encouraged to collect their funds from local banks and agents in their regions.
Those experiencing payment delays or technical issues have been advised to update their details with the financial institutions.
The programme falls under the Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP), which operates within the wider Inua Jamii Social Protection framework.
It is one of the government’s flagship initiatives aimed at protecting citizens from poverty and hunger.
“The HSNP is not only about feeding families in times of drought. It is also about strengthening resilience and helping households cope with climate change. These monthly transfers give families the dignity of choosing what to buy and planning ahead,” NDMA explained.
The eight counties benefiting from the programme are among the hardest hit by dry conditions.
Pastoralist families in these regions often lose livestock to drought, leaving many with little or no source of income.
