Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked strong reactions after urging residents of Mt. Kenya to shout at and walk out on politicians who support President William Ruto’s government.
The remarks, made during a public gathering at AIPCA Gatumbi Church in Lari, Kiambu County, have divided opinions and drawn sharp warnings from many Kenyans.
Gachagua accused Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Mt. Kenya region who continue to back President Ruto of undermining his public engagements.
He claimed that some MPs were offering money to youth groups to disrupt his meetings, a move he described as “foolish” and harmful to their constituents.
According to him, Ruto’s allies are attempting to manipulate local politics by using financial incentives to influence public opinion.
“The MPs supporting Ruto have been paid to create chaos during my visits,” Gachagua told the crowd.
“We must resist their influence. Do not allow them to use money to silence our voices or to betray the interests of Mt. Kenya.”
The statements have not gone down well with several Kenyans who say Gachagua’s approach is divisive.
Critics argue that urging residents to walk out of political events could deepen political tensions and destabilize the community.
Social media platforms were flooded with reactions condemning the call, with many describing it as irresponsible and potentially harmful to national unity.
Others have warned that Gachagua’s rhetoric could backfire politically.
Some analysts note that encouraging people to reject certain leaders’ public engagements may alienate voters and reduce trust in the democratic process.
They argue that political disagreements should be handled through debate and dialogue, not public confrontation or disruption.
Despite the backlash, Gachagua defended his position, saying residents should be cautious about politicians offering money during tours.
He stressed that accepting such funds should not translate to political support, and that the community must protect its interests against what he perceives as manipulation by Ruto and his allies.
This episode highlights the growing political rivalry in Mt. Kenya and the high stakes ahead of future elections.
