Simon Warui, a 32-year-old man, has died while in police custody at Central Police Station in Mombasa under unclear circumstances, prompting the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Faith Odhiambo, to announce close monitoring of the incident.
The death, reported early yesterday morning, has raised alarm over recurring fatalities in custody and has reignited public debate about police accountability and detainee welfare.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, Warui was detained late Monday night for reasons that remain unclear, and his death was discovered during routine checks by officers the following morning.
Authorities have yet to release an official cause of death, while the LSK has called for an independent and thorough investigation to determine whether negligence or foul play was involved.
Speaking to journalists, LSK President Faith Odhiambo condemned the incident, stating, “We are deeply concerned about yet another life lost in police custody.
We will ensure that the family receives justice and that the circumstances surrounding this death are fully investigated.” She further urged law enforcement agencies to uphold human rights and ensure the safety of all detainees under their care.
The Mombasa County Police Commander confirmed that an internal inquiry has been launched and that relevant authorities, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), are involved in the investigation.
The family of Simon Warui is reportedly devastated and is demanding answers, highlighting that similar incidents have occurred in recent months, undermining public trust in law enforcement.
Civil society groups and human rights activists have expressed outrage, calling for reforms in the policing system and stricter oversight to prevent further custodial deaths.
The outcome of this investigation is expected to draw nationwide attention and could influence policy measures regarding detainee protection and police accountability.
