Litein Boys High School has been closed indefinitely after students went on a violent rampage on Sunday night. The riot erupted when the administration refused to allow learners to watch the English Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester City.
Students had expected to follow the 90-minute game as part of the school’s weekend entertainment schedule. When the request was turned down, anger spilled over into unrest. Witnesses say the students switched off lights in the compound before launching coordinated destruction under the cover of darkness.
Dormitories and classrooms were engulfed in smoke as flames spread across several blocks. Images and videos shared online show charred walls and debris left behind by the fire. Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed despite efforts by security guards and police officers to contain the chaos.
The attack overwhelmed officers who rushed to the school after the violence broke out. The learners, acting in large groups, managed to overpower the response teams. Several school blocks now stand abandoned after the overnight strike.
This is not the first time the institution has faced such turmoil. In July, students rioted after being served undercooked rice during dinner. The incident forced police to intervene when property was damaged. In 2023, the school also closed after students went on a riot that saw biometric systems, window panes, and vehicles destroyed.
The pattern of repeated unrest has raised questions about student discipline and the leadership of the school. Education officials, police, and security teams have launched investigations into the latest incident.
Authorities are expected to release a report in the coming days on the causes of the football-related strike. For now, the compound remains deserted with students sent home until further notice.
