Litein Boys’ High School has been closed indefinitely following a violent outburst from students who set parts of the school ablaze on Sunday night.
The turmoil reportedly started when the administration refused to allow the students to watch the highly anticipated English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester City.
Sources from within the school indicated that the students had asked to view the 90-minute game as part of the regular weekend entertainment schedule, a typical practice in many boys’ schools. However, when the administration denied their request, it sparked unrest among the students.
The situation quickly escalated into a significant strike, with students turning to violence to voice their discontent with the administration’s decision.
In the wake of the incident, dormitories and classrooms were filled with smoke, resulting in the destruction of property valued at millions of shillings.
Videos and images shared online depict multiple school buildings set ablaze, leaving behind scorched walls and remnants.
Reports indicate that students managed to overpower security and police by turning off all the lights on the premises, which allowed them to carry out the vandalism under the cover of darkness.
This is not the first instance of unrest at Litein Boys’ High School. The institution has a record of similar events, prompting significant concerns regarding student discipline, mental well-being, and the efficacy of school leadership.
In July of this year, turmoil ensued at the school after students reportedly protested due to undercooked rice served at dinner.
A police report noted that the situation escalated after the evening meal, requiring law enforcement’s involvement as students began to damage school property.
This was the second instance of unrest at the school within two years, with the school having closed indefinitely in May 2023 following a riot for reasons that remain unclear.
During the riots in 2023, students also vandalized school property, including biometric systems, windows, and vehicles on campus.
Investigation into the latest incident has already commenced, led by the school authorities, education officials, and security personnel.
