A fatal dispute over a football match ended tragically in Gitwamba village, Kiambu County, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, when James Mbugua allegedly stabbed his cousin, Stephen Njoroge, to death following a quarrel during the Manchester United versus Chelsea game.
The argument, which reportedly began as a minor disagreement over the outcome of the match, escalated into violence, leaving the family and neighbours shocked.
James allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack, prompting police to launch an urgent manhunt. Relatives described James and Stephen as close cousins who often spent time together watching football and socialising.
Their sudden altercation, they said, was unexpected and has left the family mourning. “We never imagined that a simple disagreement over football could end in tragedy. They were like brothers, and now we have lost one of them,” said a grieving uncle.
Some family members suggested that alcohol may have played a role in escalating the confrontation, warning about the dangers of drinking in intensifying minor disagreements.
The police confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing and have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of James.
Officers emphasised that the case is being treated as a homicide and that those responsible for such acts of violence will be brought to justice.
Local leaders condemned the incident, urging residents to resolve conflicts peacefully and avoid resorting to violence over trivial matters such as sporting rivalries.
Community members expressed shock over the event, noting that football-related arguments rarely escalate to such extreme measures. The tragedy has sparked discussions on the importance of emotional control, responsible behaviour, and conflict resolution among young people.
Authorities are now focused on apprehending the suspect, providing support to the grieving family, and implementing awareness programmes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
