Former Chief Justice and presidential aspirant David Maraga on Thursday engaged with over 200 student leaders in Mombasa, addressing critical issues in Kenya’s education and political landscape.
Speaking after the meeting, Maraga said the students openly discussed the challenges they face in higher education, particularly the high cost of tuition and the limitations of the current financing model.
“They shared with us the challenges in the education sector, decrying the financing model and the high cost of education,” he noted.
The students also highlighted their historic role in driving political change in Kenya, reminding Maraga of the influence young people have had in shaping national discourse.
They appealed to his campaign to prioritize initiatives that directly affect youth, including the creation of job opportunities, talent management, easing barriers to entrepreneurship, and developing policies to ensure youth inclusion in leadership.
Maraga further emphasized the importance of addressing national concerns such as confronting odious debt and safeguarding the separation of powers.
“Our conversation reaffirmed the need to protect democratic institutions while empowering the next generation,” he said.
In a show of commitment, the students pledged to support voter registration drives aimed at reaching the 15 Million Strong gen z voters target.
They also emphasized using technology to secure electoral processes, underscoring a growing trend of youth-led political innovation under the ballot revolution initiative.
