Twenty-five years ago, an orphaned boy walked through the gates of Starehe Boys’ Centre and School carrying nothing but a padlock, a symbol of hope and resilience.
That boy was Caleb Amisi, now the Member of Parliament for Saboti Constituency. Having emerged as the top student in the Western Region during the 2000 KCPE examinations, Amisi had no means to pay his secondary school fees. Starehe became his refuge and the turning point that shaped his destiny.
This week, Amisi celebrated a major milestone after graduating as the top student in the Master of Arts in International Relations program at the United States International University (USIU).
His achievement, he said, was not just a personal victory but a testament to the power of education in transforming lives.
Reflecting on his journey from a disadvantaged orphan to a national leader and scholar, Amisi credited his success to faith, discipline, and resilience.
“We don’t choose where, when, or to whom we are born but we certainly have the power to choose our own destiny,” he remarked during the graduation ceremony.
He added, “If I can do it, you can surely do it,” sending a message of hope to thousands of young Kenyans facing difficult circumstances.
Amisi also used the occasion to call for a renaissance in Kenya, noting that the nation needs fresh energy, ideas, and leadership rooted in service.
He said his story proves that with opportunity and determination, young people can overcome even the harshest of beginnings to achieve greatness.
From his humble start at Starehe Boys’ Centre to becoming a parliamentarian and now a top scholar, MP Caleb Amisi’s journey is a powerful reminder of the role education plays in breaking cycles of poverty and inspiring future generations.
