Uriri MP Mark Nyamita has reaffirmed the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s long-standing reputation as Kenya’s most experienced opposition force, saying no other political group understands the work of opposition better.
Speaking during a public function in Migori County, Nyamita emphasized that ODM has been at the forefront of safeguarding democracy, holding governments accountable, and defending the rights of Kenyans for decades.
Nyamita reminded Kenyans that ODM’s history is intertwined with the country’s major democratic milestones, from the fight for multiparty democracy to constitutional reforms.
According to him, the party’s leader, Raila Odinga, and other ODM stalwarts have consistently stood up to excesses of power, making ODM uniquely qualified to play the role of watchdog over the government.
“The work of opposition is not just shouting in rallies. It is about providing oversight, questioning government policies, and offering alternative solutions that benefit the people,” Nyamita said. He added that ODM remains committed to constructive criticism and will continue pushing for a government that delivers on its promises.
Nyamita also took the opportunity to urge other opposition parties to work together to strengthen their oversight role rather than engaging in divisive politics.
He noted that a united opposition is critical in ensuring transparency, accountability, and proper utilization of public resources.
Political observers have said Nyamita’s remarks could be aimed at reassuring ODM supporters that the party remains focused on its core mission despite emerging political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
ODM has been working to consolidate its base and maintain its influence as the leading opposition party.
Nyamita concluded by pledging ODM’s commitment to defending the interests of ordinary Kenyans and ensuring that the government of the day is constantly reminded of its constitutional obligations.
