Murang’a is in mourning after a tragic accident resulted in the death of 13 family members.
The accident occurred on Sunday, September 28, in the Kariandusi area when a matatu carrying the family collided with a truck.
The family was traveling from Kahiga village in Murang’a to Rongai, Nakuru, for a family gathering.
Among the victims were eight close relatives, including parents, four sisters, an uncle, and his two daughters.
This devastating loss has left the family and the community in shock and sorrow.
Gikonyo, a family member, shared how he narrowly missed the trip. Just two days before the journey, his child called from school needing some items.
Gikonyo decided to stay back to take care of his child’s needs. Reflecting on his decision, he said, “I told my wife we would have to cancel going on the trip.”
He believes that this choice ultimately saved his life, saying, “I know it was God who protected us.”
The family now faces significant financial challenges due to the tragic loss. Gikonyo mentioned that they need to cover costs for autopsies for each victim, which amounts to KSh 15,000 per body.
This unexpected burden has prompted him to reach out for help from well-wishers to manage these expenses.
The accident has deeply affected not only the family but also the entire community.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking.
Many community members are coming forward to support the grieving relatives in any way they can.
