Mandera County was on Monday the focus of national attention as Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen led a high-profile delegation to the region for the 44th edition of Jukwaa la Usalama, a grassroots security engagement forum.
The visit marked the official start of a tour of the North Eastern region aimed at strengthening security collaboration between citizens and government agencies.
The Interior CS was accompanied by top security chiefs, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin, and GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni.
Also present were Principal Administrative Secretary Beverly Opwora, Secretary of Internal Security Thomas Saka, NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno, and senior county administrators, among others.
During the forum, Murkomen reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing security in the region, which has faced challenges such as cross-border terrorism, cattle rustling, and organized crime.
He emphasized the importance of community involvement in intelligence gathering and conflict prevention, saying that lasting security solutions require partnerships with local residents.
“Security is not just the work of the police it is a shared responsibility. We are here to listen to you, to understand your challenges, and to ensure that Mandera and the entire North Eastern region can enjoy peace and development,” Murkomen said.
The forum provided residents with an opportunity to raise concerns about security threats, the need for more police posts, and improved infrastructure to support rapid response operations.
Murkomen assured them that the government would scale up resources for both personnel and equipment to ensure the safety of communities along the Kenya–Somalia border.
The tour is expected to extend to Wajir and Garissa counties, where similar engagements will be held as part of a nationwide strategy to build trust between citizens and security agencies.
