Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has hinted that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka should consider joining forces with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections. His remarks added weight to growing speculation about a possible Ruto-Kalonzo political partnership.
Murkomen made the statement during a Sunday church service at AIC Milimani. While acknowledging Kalonzo as the central opposition figure, the CS suggested that he should instead cooperate with the ruling government, framing the idea as a call for political unity.
He specifically noted the shared membership between Kalonzo and Ruto in the AIC church. Murkomen used this common ground to urge the two leaders to come together, saying their shared faith affiliation could form a basis for cooperation.
“William Ruto is seeking re-election and belongs to the AIC church, and the opposition leader is also from AIC,” Murkomen stated. “If possible, unite us, so we can work collectively as one,” he added.
Murkomen becomes the latest government official to fuel talks about Kalonzo leaving the opposition, despite Kalonzo repeatedly rejecting overtures. The Wiper boss has consistently said he cannot work with Ruto’s government, which he has labeled as “blood-based.”
Earlier this month, Kalonzo reiterated his opposition to any collaboration. On September 7, he warned his colleagues against deviating from the shared opposition agenda, stressing that their collective focus must remain firm ahead of the next general election.
Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp also criticized attempts to woo Kalonzo. Through the Democracy for Citizens Party, Gachagua’s allies accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of desperation, claiming they are relying on unorthodox means to lure him into government.
They alleged Ruto is using religious leaders, community elders, and traditional figures to sway Kalonzo. The statement reminded Kenyans that Ruto only narrowly defeated Raila Odinga in 2022, securing victory by about 200,000 votes, leaving the ruling side politically unsettled.
Although Gachagua insists he is best placed to challenge Ruto in 2027, there is still no agreed opposition flagbearer. Reports indicate a special committee has shortlisted four names, with an official announcement on the candidate expected in due course.
