The memorial service of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk turned emotional on Sunday, September 21, in Glendale, Arizona, when his widow, Erika Kirk, delivered a moving message of forgiveness.
Erika, a mother of two, stood before mourners and said she had chosen to forgive 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the man accused of fatally shooting her husband earlier this month. Her message, grounded in faith, surprised many and brought some in the audience to tears.
“My husband wanted to reach and transform young men just like the one who took his life,” she said.
“I forgive him because this is what Christ would do, and it is what Charlie would have wanted.”
Charlie Kirk was shot on September 10 during a campus debate at Utah Valley University. Investigators said Robinson sent text messages before and after the incident, claiming he was tired of what he called Kirk’s “hatred.”
He now faces a murder charge and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Asked about the possible punishment, Erika told mourners she would leave that decision to the courts. “I do not want that man’s blood on my ledger,” she explained.
She also described the painful moment she saw her husband’s body at the hospital after the shooting.
“I felt horror and heartbreak I never knew existed,” she recalled.
She added that she found comfort in what looked like a faint smile on his face, believing it meant he did not suffer in his final moments.
Despite her grief, Erika promised to continue her husband’s work as leader of Turning Point USA, the conservative youth movement he founded.
She thanked the public for their overwhelming support, saying it gave her the strength to carry on.
“The answer to hate is not more hate,” she said.
“The answer is love—love for our enemies and for those who persecute us.”
