The mysterious death of Kanyiri Wathika, son of former Nairobi Mayor and Mathare MP Dick Wathika, continues to raise suspicions and demands for answers five years later.

Kanyiri was found dead in his family’s Windsor home in 2020 in what was initially reported as a suicide. His mother, Asenath Wacera Maina, discovered him hanging in a small closet from a clothing rod, using a tie.
While the official report concluded suicide, friends revealed he had been emotionally distressed, particularly following the controversial death of his father in 2015. Kanyiri reportedly believed his father’s death from a reported cardiac arrest was suspicious and feared that individuals close to the family had exploited the situation to gain control of his father’s estate.
Recent claims suggest foul play, linking Kanyiri’s death to ongoing family conflicts and inheritance disputes. Speculation has been fueled by questions about how a young man over five feet tall could have hanged himself inside a small closet using only a tie fastened to a clothing rod, leading to theories that the suicide scene may have been staged.
Furthermore, Kanyiri had confided in friends about feelings of betrayal. Critics are now questioning why Kanyiri’s own premonitions of betrayal following his father’s death were not taken more seriously by investigators.
Prompted by these inconsistencies, private citizens are gathering evidence to petition the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to reopen the case. They argue that Kanyiri’s death was not a suicide, but a homicide.
