ODM parliamentary aspirant Moses Omondi has moved to dispel speculation that his candidacy in the upcoming Ugunja by-election is being propped up by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.
Speaking at a funeral in Ndendyo, Ugunja Sub-County, Omondi described the allegations as baseless propaganda meant to discredit his campaign. He insisted that his political journey is a product of personal conviction and the will of the electorate.
“I am contesting as Moses Omondi, not on behalf of anyone else. The people of Ugunja are my only backers, and they will decide who represents them,” he told mourners.
Although Omondi previously served as Wandayi’s NG-CDF manager for over a decade, he emphasized that his leadership ambitions stem from years of community service rather than political patronage.
He urged his competitors to focus on development-oriented agendas rather than character attacks.
The aspirant highlighted his experience in overseeing CDF projects, promising to strengthen grassroots development initiatives if elected. “I understand the needs of this constituency. My first priority will be to implement projects that deliver quick results while planning for long-term growth,” he said.
The Ugunja parliamentary seat fell vacant following Wandayi’s Cabinet appointment. In 2022, Wandayi secured a landslide victory with more than 32,000 votes.
The ODM primaries are expected to be highly competitive, with Omondi set to face rivals including businessman Joseph Aluru, lawyer MJ Okumu, engineer Fredrick Owino, and Fredrick Oyugi Dor.
Despite the mounting political heat, Omondi expressed confidence that his rapport with residents and his track record would work in his favor. “I have walked with the people of Ugunja for years. I believe they know me and my commitment,” he remarked.
