The Orange Democratic Movement has begun a series of activities to mark its 20th anniversary while also laying groundwork for the 2027 elections. The party is holding rallies across the country aimed at energizing its base and reaffirming its political strength.
After a colorful entry in Wajir over the weekend, ODM is expected to hold more celebrations in Mombasa and Kilifi. The climax will take place in Mombasa between October 10 and 12 where top leaders including Raila Odinga, President William Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka are invited.
This Friday ODM leaders will head to Kisii as part of the nationwide tour. Party officials say the events are meant to consolidate support and assure loyalists that ODM remains focused on the future.
ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga told supporters in Wajir that the party stands firm on working with government while also protecting its independence. She praised Raila Odinga’s consistency and said his leadership explains why ODM has endured for two decades.
The weekend meeting drew senior leaders such as deputy party leader Abdulswamad Nassir, minority leader Junet Mohamed, governors Nathif Jama of Garissa, Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir and several MPs.
Wanga said ODM will still pursue power either on its own or in coalition with others. She noted that defending devolution and human rights has always been at the heart of the party’s agenda.
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also reaffirmed ODM’s mission. He said the party will continue to uphold the Constitution and invited supporters to join all activities as proof that the party’s goals remain intact.
ODM’s 20th anniversary comes at a time when divisions are visible inside the party over cooperation with government. Analysts believe ODM faces a tough task in retaining its grip on key regions like Western and Gusii where dissent is growing.
The party is also focusing on bringing young people into its structures as Raila Odinga turns 80. Many observers see this as an attempt to prepare for a transition while keeping the movement alive.
By staging anniversary events across the country, ODM is signaling that it will not surrender its influence easily. The 2027 contest is still far, but the party is already taking steps to guard its turf and sustain its popularity.
