Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s longtime opposition leader, may still run for president in 2027.
Even though his party, ODM, is currently cooperating with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government, Raila has not confirmed whether he will support another candidate or run himself.
In a recent speech during a tour of Mfangano Island in Homa Bay, Raila told his supporters that he is “not ready to go home” and hinted at a possible sixth attempt at the presidency.
He said he is still young for politics and asked his supporters to be ready for what he called “a war ahead”.
Reports from Nation Africa and The Star show that there is growing political tension in Mount Kenya, especially around Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who seems increasingly isolated. Some leaders from the region are unhappy with Ruto’s government, which could give Raila a chance to build new alliances.
Raila’s strongholds—Luo Nyanza, Western Kenya, Coast, parts of Nairobi, and even parts of Northern Kenya—remain loyal. Many of his supporters still believe he was unfairly denied victory in past elections and would back him again.
Public frustration over high living costs and unmet promises by the Kenya Kwanza government has also created a desire for change. Raila is seen by many as an experienced leader who could bring reforms and development.
If Raila decides to leave the current cooperation with Ruto and forms a new coalition—especially with a running mate from Central Kenya—he could reshape the 2027 race.
His candidacy would likely represent resistance, renewal, and unfinished business, which could energize voters across the country.
