Tension unfolded at a political rally in Kajiado after a dramatic encounter between a helicopter pilot and curious residents who had gathered too close to the aircraft carrying Governor Joseph Ole Lenku.
In a video that has since gone viral, the pilot of helicopter 5Y-DSB was seen alighting in visible anger after spotting a group of young men perched on the landing skids. The footage captures the pilot slapping one man before chasing away another who had positioned himself to take photos beside the machine.
The sudden outburst startled the crowd, many of whom quickly scattered from the chopper. While the exact trigger of the confrontation remains unclear, the video has fueled heated online debates, with some defending the pilot’s reaction and others condemning his methods.
Bishop Ikayo, commenting online, sided with the pilot: “Those boys have really gone too far, sitting on the stands of a helicopter. I can’t blame him.” But others felt the professional had crossed a line, with one user writing, “The pilot’s personal actions don’t align with his professional persona.”
Kajiado County Communications Director Paul Tobiko defended the pilot’s actions, citing safety concerns. He noted that in past incidents, individuals have endangered themselves and passengers by clinging to helicopters during takeoff.
The episode adds to a growing list of helicopter-related stunts in Kenya. Earlier this year, a Migori man clung onto a departing chopper during musician Prince Indah’s traditional wedding, sparking national debate about the dangers of such behavior.
As the video continues to circulate, Kenyans remain divided—between those who argue the pilot’s reaction was justified for safety, and those who believe he should have handled the situation more calmly.
