Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has called on party members to exercise restraint when discussing the party’s political direction as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Speaking during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations, Odinga stressed that members should avoid making premature statements about the party’s plans. He noted that while ODM has a clear strategy in place, decisions on its next moves will be announced officially at the right time.
“Don’t commit the party to some things that have not been discussed. Who told you ODM does not have a candidate in 2027?” Odinga asked.
He added, “As ODM, we have a clear plan that we have agreed on, and let us implement it. Other decisions will be made when the time comes.”
His remarks come amid growing tension within ODM, with some members warning they could leave if the party chooses to back President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. Among them is Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who recently emphasized that personal conviction must not be sacrificed for party loyalty.
“Raila himself has said that this is a democratic party and any member is free to speak their mind. Yet some thugs are saying I cannot hold views independent of the party just because I am the secretary-general, that I represent the party at all times,” Sifuna stated.
Odinga, however, has remained noncommittal on whether he will be on the presidential ballot in 2027, choosing instead to keep his options open while rallying members to stay disciplined and focused on the party’s collective agenda.
