Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has called for a crucial Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting this morning, bringing together legislators from both the National Assembly and Senate to align on party priorities ahead of Parliament’s resumption and the party’s upcoming 20th anniversary.
The meeting, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Argyle Grand Hotel along Mombasa Road, comes just a day before the National Assembly and Senate reconvene following a lengthy recess. According to a memo issued by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, the gathering will focus on legislative strategy and preparations for the party’s milestone celebrations.
“Our party—the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)—will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary from the 9th to the 12th of October 2025. In preparation for this important milestone, you are hereby invited to attend an ODM parliamentary (PG) meeting,” Junet’s memo read.
ODM has planned a four-day celebration in Mombasa next month to mark two decades of political engagement, electoral battles, and democratic advocacy.
Raila is expected to lead a pre-anniversary rally in Kisii this Friday, where delegates and supporters from Nyanza and Western regions will converge at Gusii Stadium for cultural and political festivities.
Last weekend, the party held similar activities in Wajir County, signaling a nationwide mobilization effort ahead of the October festivities.
Beyond the anniversary, the PG meeting is expected to address growing internal divisions within ODM, particularly over the party’s stance on the broad-based government arrangement.
A faction led by Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, alongside MPs Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Anthony Kibagendi, Obadia Barongo, and Clive Gisairo, has been vocal in opposing the party’s perceived alignment with President William Ruto’s administration.
This group, informally known as the Kenya Moja movement, is pushing for a more independent opposition posture.
Conversely, another faction led by Junet Mohamed, Peter Kaluma, George Aladwa, and Sam Atandi has embraced the broad-based framework and expressed support for Ruto’s two-term bid. These ideological differences are expected to influence ODM’s parliamentary agenda, especially on key legislative and policy matters.
His presence at today’s PG meeting signals an attempt to consolidate support and reaffirm ODM’s strategic direction ahead of a busy political calendar.
