Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has joined other African leaders in congratulating Malawi’s President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika, following his victory in the recently concluded elections.
In a strongly worded message, Gachagua described the development as not just a national triumph for Malawi but a continental milestone for Africa’s democracy.
Gachagua hailed the people of Malawi for what he termed as a “historic democratic victory”, noting that their decision at the ballot box was a powerful reminder of the sovereignty of African citizens.
He emphasized that the outcome in Malawi signals the end of an era where strongmen clung to power through intimidation, propaganda, and manipulation.
The former deputy president drew parallels between Malawi’s election and Kenya’s upcoming 2027 General Elections, urging Kenyans to take lessons from their Malawian counterparts. He insisted that citizens must reject fear, manipulation, and corruption while using the ballot to reclaim their future.
Quoting examples of past authoritarian leaders such as Idi Amin, Mobutu Sese Seko, and Robert Mugabe, Gachagua argued that Africa has entered a new phase where leaders can no longer hold onto power against the will of the people.
He added that Malawi’s results should send a warning to leaders who rely on state machinery, tribal politics, and deceit to remain in office.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also praised outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat with dignity, describing the gesture as a rare show of political maturity in African politics.
By congratulating Prof. Mutharika, Chakwera demonstrated that leadership is not about clinging to office but respecting the will of the people, Gachagua noted.
“Your victory, President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika, is Africa’s victory,” Gachagua concluded. “It should ring loudly in the hearts of those still waiting for justice, dignity, real leadership, and liberation.”
