President William Ruto is reportedly solidifying plans to retain Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as his running mate for the 2027 general election, a strategic shift that follows the October 2024 impeachment of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.
At the heart of this decision is a series of discreet, late-night meetings orchestrated by Professor Kindiki at his Karen residence. Sources close to State House indicate these sessions with Members of Parliament, governors, and key sector leaders are the engine room for the government’s development agenda. Rather than political scheming, these meetings are focused on fast-tracking crucial projects, such as the Kakamega Level 6 Hospital and the Isiolo-Mandera road, building a foundation of quiet efficiency.
This methodical approach has been instrumental in rebuilding trust within the critical Mt. Kenya region, Kindiki’s political stronghold. By directly engaging leaders on sensitive issues like tea sector reforms and other local economic challenges, the Deputy President has cultivated a reputation for effective governance, a stark contrast to the divisive rhetoric that led to Gachagua’s ouster.
President Ruto, who sources say once felt like a “lonely voice” during Gachagua’s tenure, now heavily relies on Kindiki’s polished and eloquent delivery of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). Kindiki’s unwavering loyalty, which traces back to his support for Ruto during the ICC trials and the 2022 campaign, is demonstrated through his swift implementation of presidential directives.
“My duty is to ensure the President’s agenda benefits wananchi (citizens),” Kindiki recently stated, reinforcing his commitment to the administration’s goals.
The political landscape is further shaped by a potential alliance that allies have termed “unbeatable.” Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and other proponents have pointed to a formidable Ruto-Kindiki-Raila Odinga coalition, citing a strong development record as its unifying force.
However, the increasing influence of the ODM party and the inherent volatility of Mt. Kenya politics present potential challenges for the ticket.
Despite these risks, Kindiki’s calculated and unifying strategy has made him an indispensable asset for President Ruto’s re-election campaign.
He is now positioned as a vital cog in the machinery aimed at securing a second term for President Ruto.
