Emotional scenes unfolded during the burial of 26-year-old Simon Warui, a young man who allegedly died while in police custody.
According to sources, during his funeral in Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County, his wife broke down uncontrollably and clung to his coffin, refusing to let it go. Her grief moved mourners to tears and forced some of them to intervene, gently pleading with her to release the coffin so that Warui could be laid to rest.
The late Warui, who lived in Umoja, Nairobi, was first reported missing on September 14, 2025. His family immediately launched a search, and by September 17, they received information that he was being held at the Central Police Station in Mombasa.
Hopeful of reuniting with him, the family travelled to Mombasa the following day. However, their journey ended in heartbreak when they were informed that Simon had died while in custody.
According to police reports, the deceased allegedly fell and died while attempting to climb a wall inside the cell.
The explanation has left the family devastated and demanding justice. They insist that Simon’s death remains unexplained and are now calling on relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his final moments.
For the mourners who gathered to pay their last respects, Simon’s burial was not only a farewell but also a painful reminder of unanswered questions about his untimely death.
