Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has sounded the alarm over increasing insecurity within Kisumu and its surrounding areas, urging urgent action from both government agencies and the community.
Speaking on Monday, the governor admitted that residents have raised consistent concerns over criminal activities and the deteriorating state of public safety. He noted that the situation could worsen if swift solutions are not implemented.
“Insecurity has become a serious problem in Kisumu and the surrounding areas. From increased sale of illicit brews, poor or no lighting along our roads, the rise of vigilante groups, and cases of sexual-related violence, the menace is gross,” Nyong’o stated.
He further warned that unchecked lawlessness threatens not only the safety of residents but also the economic growth of Kisumu, which is one of the country’s fastest developing cities.
To address the issue, Governor Nyong’o revealed that he has convened an inter-agency security meeting. The session will bring together police commanders, local administrators, community leaders, and other stakeholders to chart a way forward.
The county boss stressed that tackling insecurity requires a collective approach, urging citizens to cooperate with security officers by sharing information that can help curb crime.
He also called for stronger regulation of alcohol, better street lighting, and structured youth engagement programs to dismantle vigilante groups and reduce crime.
Residents have welcomed the governor’s remarks but are now pressing for tangible results rather than repeated promises.
