A somber mood has engulfed Bondo Nyironge in Migori County after a violent mob attack left one young man dead and another nursing serious injuries on Sunday, September 21.
Police identified the victims as Vincent Osubo Gekonga, 26, who tragically lost his life, and John Paul Wenyo, 19, who sustained severe injuries during the ordeal. According to a police report filed at Bondo Nyironge Police Station, the incident unfolded at around midday, just two kilometres from the station.
Officers responded swiftly after receiving distress calls from members of the public, but by the time they arrived, the mob had already descended on the two men. Details remain scanty on what triggered the attack, but witnesses said the crowd acted with unchecked rage, leaving devastation in its wake.
Authorities condemned the attack, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands. “We strongly urge members of the public to refrain from mob justice. Every suspect, regardless of the allegations, deserves to face due process in a court of law,” read part of the police statement.
The body of the deceased was moved to Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary, while the injured victim is receiving treatment at the same facility under close medical supervision.
Community leaders expressed concern over the rising cases of mob justice in the region, urging locals to embrace legal avenues of resolving disputes. “This is a painful loss of young life and a reminder that anger should never replace justice,” said one elder at the scene.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the lynching and to identify individuals involved in the mob attack.
