Ugunja parliamentary hopeful Moses Omondi has dismissed allegations that he was plotting to interfere with the upcoming ODM primaries. The nominations are scheduled for Friday, September 26, 2025, with several aspirants eyeing the party ticket ahead of a by-election.
Speaking during a meeting on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Omondi described the petition against him as premature, misleading, and laughable. He accused his rivals of spreading fear-driven propaganda to discredit his campaign, insisting the people of Ugunja will decide fairly.
Omondi argued that the accusations were like “answering exam questions before the test is done,” urging his competitors to present their manifestos and ideas to the electorate instead of resorting to what he termed as baseless and desperate claims.
The parliamentary aspirant further appealed to the ODM election board and party structures to uphold transparency, cautioning them against being influenced by “sideshows” engineered to distort democracy. He emphasized that fairness and credibility in the primaries must be safeguarded.
“I remain committed to a peaceful, people-driven campaign,” Omondi said. “The will of Ugunja residents should prevail, and I am confident their voice will be heard at the ballot box during Friday’s ODM nomination exercise.”
The claims of possible rigging had been raised by fellow aspirant Fredrick Owino, who petitioned party officials during a meeting. He alleged that certain candidates were working behind the scenes to manipulate the election outcome in favour of a chosen contender.
Omondi countered by pointing to his strong grassroots support across Sidindi, Ugunja, and Sigomere. He highlighted interactions with residents and backing from local leaders, insisting his growing popularity has unsettled rivals who are resorting to premature petitions.
Ugunja MCA Edwin Otieno echoed this sentiment, praising Omondi’s campaign strategy and dismissing the influence of rivals. He assured locals that they were mobilizing in villages to rally support, describing Omondi as a candidate with genuine intentions for the constituency.
The ODM primaries in Ugunja will feature a competitive lineup, with Omondi facing Fredrick Owino, ZB Owino, and Joseph Otieno Aluru. The winner will carry the party flag into the parliamentary by-election, a contest closely watched in Siaya County politics.
