As Tanzania’s election clock ticks toward October 29, President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s campaign trail is attracting both emotion and spectacle. Her latest stop in Songea on Monday painted a vivid picture of loyalty, tradition, and politics converging in one arena.
The head of state, who is seeking a fresh mandate under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), was ushered into the town with overwhelming jubilation. The sight was striking: women in green and yellow party attire sang, danced, and in a dramatic show of respect, some went as far as kneeling and rolling on the ground to welcome her. Motorbikes, bicycles, and a colourful motorcade snaked through the streets, while a helicopter hovering above bore her campaign posters. To crown it all, celebrated Bongo Flava star Diamond Platnumz set the mood with an electrifying campaign anthem.
In her address, Suluhu expressed deep gratitude to the people of Songea for the elaborate preparations. She also praised her running mate, Emmanuel Nchimbi, who hails from the region, describing him as a symbol of homegrown leadership.
The president reminded Tanzanians of the development projects achieved during her tenure, highlighting improvements in social welfare, production, and infrastructure. She assured the crowd that if re-elected, her administration would not only complete pending projects but also launch new initiatives tailored to uplift livelihoods in the region.
But her message was not entirely celebratory. Suluhu issued a stern warning against individuals reportedly plotting to destabilize the elections. She emphasized that security agencies are alert and ready to guarantee peace and order as political tensions rise.
Her words echoed both confidence and caution—urging unity while reminding voters that the choice they make will shape the country’s stability and progress.
For Songea residents, the day was more than politics. It was a cultural expression, a celebration of identity, and a chance to reaffirm loyalty to a woman who has become both a leader and a symbol of continuity.
