Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence after Malawi’s dramatic election that saw President Lazarus Chakwera voted out after serving just one term.
In his message, Gachagua hailed the victory of Prof. Peter Mutharika as proof that the will of the people can never be suppressed.
According to Gachagua, the election was more than a political contest. It was a continental statement that Africa is entering a new era where citizens will no longer tolerate lies, corruption, or leaders clinging to power.
He declared that WANTAM is inevitable, suggesting that voters across the continent are increasingly ready to send home presidents who fail to meet their expectations, even after a single term in office.
Gachagua praised Malawians for their courage, saying they had demonstrated that democracy remains alive and powerful in Africa.
“The ballot is still the strongest weapon of liberation when leaders choose deafness over listening,” he said, pointing out that ordinary citizens had spoken loudly against misrule.
He also commended outgoing President Chakwera for conceding defeat gracefully and congratulating his rival, calling it a rare show of statesmanship that Africa needs more of.
Turning his focus to Kenya, Gachagua reminded Kenyans that the 2027 General Election is fast approaching and that they too have the power to determine their country’s future.
He urged citizens to take inspiration from Malawi’s example, to reject fear and manipulation, and to use their votes as a tool to reclaim dignity, justice, and accountable leadership.
“Malawi has shown Africa that people are awake,” Gachagua said. “They see, they think, and they act. That is why wantam is not just a slogan, it is a reality.”
